Power Play – Mastering Electrical Reliability

With the advent of technology, we have seen an enormous rise in the number of smart homes across the world. Smart homes are houses that are equipped with technology that allows homeowners to control and automate their homes remotely. This technology has brought convenience and efficiency to their daily lives, but it has also brought concerns about safety, particularly in regard to the earthing system.

Without an efficient earthing system, you could be exposed to the risk of electric shock, electrical device errors, harmonic distortion issues, and power factor problems. If fault currents have no path to the ground through a properly designed and maintained earthing system, there are high chances of fatalities.

Considering such risks and making electrical circuits safe for the users, the earthing system was introduced. If the earthing system is perfect at your home, current flows from a higher to a lower potential. Therefore, any electrical appliance or electricity line connected to the earth is at zero voltage. If any electrical energy overloading of current arises, then immediate discharge of electrical energy occurs to the ground without harming the appliance or the human.

Earthing Benefits for Smart Homes

•            Keeps the electric appliance safe from the damage.

•            It protects breakdown that can occur from the lightning.

•            Earthing helps in the protection of overvoltage and stabilization of voltage.

•            Earthing prevents injury damage and death caused by electric current.

•            It helps in avoiding the risk of fire in electrical installation systems.

•            It ensures the safety from the fire which may be occurred from the current leakage

Types of Earthing Systems

Some of the common earthing systems are:

TT Earthing System

The TT earthing system is a standalone system where each electrical appliance or device is connected directly to the earth. This system provides the most effective protection against electrical shocks and is commonly used in areas where the soil is highly resistive, making it difficult to achieve a low resistance path to the ground.

TN Earthing System

The TN earthing system is a common earthing system used worldwide. In this system, the neutral wire of the electrical circuit is connected to the earth at a single point, usually at the main switchboard. All metal parts of electrical equipment and appliances are then connected to the earth via the protective earthing conductor. The TN earthing system is relatively easy to install and maintain and is suitable for areas with low soil resistivity.

IT Earthing System

The IT earthing system is a relatively uncommon earthing system used mainly in critical applications such as hospitals, data centers, and airports. In this system, the neutral point of the transformer is not connected to the earth, and the electrical system is isolated from the ground. Instead, a separate earth electrode is installed for each circuit, and a monitoring system continuously measures the insulation resistance between the circuit and the earth. If the insulation resistance drops below a predetermined value, an alarm is triggered, and the faulty circuit is isolated.

We are one of the world’s leading experts in this field and perform various studies, tests, measurements, modeling, and simulations to analyze and implement safe electrical systems and adequate equipment performance to reduce operational losses and occurrences of incidents or fatal accidents during electrical faults and failures.

We also provide IIoT based earthing solution, Remote Fault-time Earth Resistance Monitoring (R-FERM) System that works on advanced patented technology that transposes manual monitoring to an automated online monitoring network. It provides real-time data of the health of the earthing systems remotely.  Through an alarm system, it detects the occurrence of faults and notifies the plant operators.
